Players Broncos Picks Injuries Projections Rookies Blogs SuperbowlPublished: June 19, 2009
What is up in Denver?
I was against the firing of Mike Shannahan, but I understood it. He had few playoff wins and no Super Bowl appearences since the departure of Elway. I was, myself, getting to the point at which I was going to call for his job, although I thought he should have been given at least one more year, but as I said I can understand why he was fired even if I don’t agree with it.
I was even somewhat behind the hiring of Josh McDaniels. I thought, coming from the Patriots, he was a fairly good pick. But then he came in and completely tore apart the team.
I was so pumped for this season—I thought Denver really had a chance to compete for a title, especially with the arrivals of Lamont Jordan, Corell Buckhalter, and Brian Dawkins.
But McDaniels immediately came in and tried to trade Cutler, who was, in my opinion, the franchise player on the team. He is also arguably one of the best quarterbacks in the league.
Yes, Cutler was kind of a baby after the attempted trade for Cassell fell through, and he refused to try and make it work in Denver, but he never should have been put in that situation. What other head coach would ever dream of coming onto a team and immediately trying to trade a starting quarterback the caliber of Jay Cutler?
The Broncos were lucky they were able to get Orton. And now Brandon Marshall wants to be traded, so now the starting quarterback and best wide receiver on the team in 2008 will likely not be with them in 2009.
